Youth Sailing Foundation of Indian River County, Inc. is an ALL
VOLUNTEER, 501(c)(3) organization funded solely by
Our activities are open to Indian River County children ages
8 and older who can pass a swimming test.
Why sailing? Our program
takes children outdoors, away from computers and cell phones
while providing the physical activity so lacking today.
Sailing often provides a way for children with
limited athletic skills to compete equally with children who
are more athletically inclined.
Our progress in the 4 years since inception is amazing.
Much of this growth is the result of partnerships
with the Vero Beach City Marina, the Vero Beach Power
Squadron, the Moorings Yacht Club and the Vero Beach Yacht
Club. We now have a
total 30 Optimist sailboats, 20 of which were donated to be
used by children who cannot afford their own boat.
Foundation is all about the children.
As our children grow in the confidence that comes
with rigging and piloting their own sailboat, completing
races, learning the sailing language, and interacting not
only with children but with adults, we see our goals being
success is measured in the positive changes in our children.
Our program has three parts:
Free children’s sailing instruction by certified US Sailing
Instructors; in the classroom and on the water.
Optimist sailboats are used for beginning sailors
between the ages of 8 & 15.
Summer Sailing Camp held at the Moorings Club.
(There is a fee to participate in Summer Camp.)
of eight foot wooden Optimist sailboat kits by parents and
children under the supervision of trained YSF volunteers.
The kits cost $1700.00
Club 420 Program; free lessons on our Club 420
sailboats which are larger, 2-person sailboats for our
older, more experienced sailors.
