Class Options

Below is a list of homeschool and after-school class options. All classes meet 2 days a week. Please email info@ysfirc.org with any questions

Homeschool Classes
All Homeschool classes 11:00 am-2:00 pm

  • Homeschool Beginner 105+ lbs - (Tuesdays/Thursdays) This course is designed for “larger” (105 lbs and up) beginners, will use Sunfish, Rockets, and Lasers, and work up to the 420’s
  • Homeschool Beginner Opti - (Mondays/Wednesdays) Our most popular class. Sailors learn how to rig and sail the Opti (small single-handed boat) Sailors must be 105 lbs or less.
  • Homeschool Intermediate Opti - (Tuesdays/Thursdays) For Sailors who have completed at least a full season of Beginner Opti. Students will fine-tune their sailing skills and learn more advanced techniques.
  • Homeschool Adventure/Feva - (Wednesdays/Fridays) *Intermediate and up* - Sailors must be at Intermediate level or higher. This course starts with the use of the Feva (double-handed boat) and branches out to other boats later in the season (Hobies, sunfish lasers, etc)
  • Homeschool Learn to Race w/ Flotilla Fridays (L2R) - (Wednesdays/Fridays) A mix between Adventure and Intro to Racing. This class is designed for those “older” sailors who are aging out of Adventure and are getting too big for the Feva. Boat handling skills in a 420 on Wednesdays and fun free-sail in Sunfish, Hobbies, Rocket, and Laser on “Flotilla Fridays”

After-School Classes
All classes 4:00-6:30 pm (until Nov. 3rd- after time change 4:00 pm-6:00 pm

  • After-School Beginner Opti - (Mondays/Wednesdays) Our most popular class. Sailors learn how to rig and sail the Opti (small single-handed boat) Sailors must be 105 lbs or less.
  • After-School Beginner 420 - (Tuesdays/Fridays) For new sailors who weigh 105 lbs and up. Sailors will learn to rig and sail the 420.
  • After-School JV 420 - (Wednesday/Thursdays) Similar to an “Intermediate 420”, Sailors will fine-tune their sailing skills, learn more advanced techniques, and be introduced to some of the basics of racing sailboats.
  • After-School Intermediate Opti - (Tuesdays/Thursdays) For Sailors who have completed at least a full season of Beginner Opti. Students will fine-tune their sailing skills and learn more advanced techniques.

All beginner programs do not have fees if it is your first term sailing, if it is your second term as a beginner sailor there is a nominal fee of $150. No fee should prevent a sailor from sailing, scholarships are available upon request.

All intermediate programs including Adventure/Feva, L2R and JV have a nominal fee of $300. No fee should prevent a sailor from sailing, scholarships are available upon request.

Opti Racing

After completing the Intermediate Opti Class sailors can be chosen to be a part of our Shelby Racing Team. This is a competitive Opti Racing Program that competes in the Florida East Coast series and in other high-level regattas across the state of Florida.

  • Shelby Racing Team
    Fridays 4:00 - 6:30 pm, Saturdays & Sundays 9:00 am - 2:00 pm. Runs from September 9th - December 6th.
    Age range: 9-15 years old
    Weight Requirement: Under 120 lbs
    This program has a nominal fee of $450.
    No fee should prevent a sailor from sailing, scholarships are available upon request.

Adventure and Feva Sailing

This program focuses on the skills and fundamentals needed for both single and double handed sailing. These classes are offered in a fun and recreational environment and the sailors are not interested in joining a racing focused program at this time. This program is for sailors who have completed 1 year of sailing (2 semesters). Ideal weight for this class ranges 100-200 pounds.

This program will use the RS Feva, pictured to the right. Adventure programs may also use the Hobies and Lasers throughout the season.

  • Adventure - (Wednesdays/Fridays 11:00 am - 2:00 pm)
    *Intermediate and up* - Sailors must be at Intermediate level or higher. This course starts with the use of the Feva (double-handed boat) and branches out to other boats later in the season (Hobies, sunfish lasers, etc)

High School and Middle School C420 Sailing

The C420 is a double handed boat that is perfect for beginners and highly competitive sailors a like. Here at YSF we offer C420 classes at 3 different levels, Beginner, Intermediate, and Varsity Racing.

Middle school and High School aged beginner sailors, who may have interest in joining the Vero Beach High School Sailing team down the road, can join our beginner 420 class. This class will teach sailors the fundamentals of sailing.

After completing the Beginner 420 class, Adventure sailing, or for sailors coming out of Advanced Opti and Racing programs, sailors can join the Intermediate 420 class. This class is geared towards preparing sailors for the competitive format of High School Sailing.

  • JV/Intermediate 420:
    Wednesdays & Thursdays 4:00 pm - 6:30pm. Runs from September 9th - December 6th.
    Age range: 12-18 years old
    Weight Minimum: 115lbs
    *Transportation is provided from select schools.
    This program has a nominal fee of $300. No fee should prevent a sailor from sailing, scholarships are available upon request.
  • Varsity/Racing 420:
    Thursdays & Fridays 3:30 pm - 6:30 pm and Saturdays 9:00 am - 2:00 pm
    Age range: 12-18 years old
    Weight Minimum: 115 lbs
    *Transportation is provided from select schools.
    This program has a nominal fee of $450. No fee should prevent a sailor from sailing, scholarships are available upon request.

We also ask for donations as these nominal fees do not cover the cost of our programs.
